2010 Lunar New Year Parade

February 14, 2010

On Wentworth from 24th St. to Cermak Rd.

The Chinatown New Year Parade celebrating the Lunar New Year, “Year of the TIGER 4708” will include marching bands, floats, lion teams, a100’ Mystical Dragon, and Miss Friendship Ambassador. Please join us to welcome the New Year as we convey “Gung Hay Fat Choi” to all in attendance.

Parade step-off time is 1:00PM though there are other activities starting as early as 11:30AM.

Gung Hay Fat Choy means “Best wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year.”

Chinese New Year marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.  It is a time for family reunions, for honoring ancestors and for thanking the gods for their blessings.

Families make great preparations for this special celebration.  Before the new year, families settle debts and buy new clothes. The house is cleaned and food is prepared.  Homes are filled with flowers and fruit. Oranges, tangerines, and pomeloes are picked and displayed . The colors symbolize good luck and joy.

Blossoms symbolize longevity and courage.  Some Chinese believe that if flowers blossom on New Year’s Day good fortune will be theirs for the next year.  Candy trays of candied melon, coconut, lotus seed  and watermelon seed are offered. They signify growth, good health, abundance and togetherness.

Scrolls or couplets are hung on walls or doorways to carry messages of good health, luck, long life, prosperity, and happiness.  A popular one reads “May everything be according to your wishes.”

Children behave impeccably because they are warned that what happens the first day of the year may decide events for the coming year.  Everyone takes care to say and do the right things and think good thoughts.

On the seventh day of the New Year everyone adds a year to their age no matter when they were born.  In traditional China individual birthdays were not considered as important as this New Year”s date.

Introducing Jennifer Berman, MOE Executive Team Member

Thursday, February 4, 2010 posted by jenberman 4:35 pm

Welcome to the second installment in our series of “Meet The MOE Executive Team,” introducing Jennifer Berman, Executive Marketing Consultant for Mimi’s Organic Exchange. In addition to MOE Marketing, Jennifer is an Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki Master and is instrumental in creating a positive flow of energy at MOE events. Jennifer is the owner of Metabody Studio, a staff Reiki Master at Juvenesse Peace Spa, and is Co-Presenter of The EnergyXChange, a monthly social networking Energy event.

What is REIKI?

Reiki is a form of touch therapy, like reflexology or massage. Reiki is based on the principal that the undisturbed flow and balance of energy in and around the body is the basis of good health and wellness. Blocked or stagnant energy can manifest as stress, pain, illness or disease. Reiki is considered Energy Medicine by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the US National Institutes of Health. Energy Medicine is traditional in many cultures, and is also at the forefront of medical research. Studies show that Reiki has measurable electrical and magnetic qualities, which create positive physical change in the body. Reiki is used in hundreds of hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, and spas.

During a Reiki treatment, the client lies fully clothed on the table, and the Practitioner places hands in various positions around the body, based upon the client’s individual needs. Clients are usually deeply relaxed after a Reiki treatment, and a single Reiki session can have far-reaching effects, from relief of specific symptoms, to profound clarity and insight. The effects of Reiki are cumulative, and clients often arrange for a series of sessions. The time span and frequency of sessions depends on a client’s individual needs and on the pace of the healing process. Please keep in mind that Reiki is a complementary therapy, and is not intended to diagnose disease or replace medical treatment.

Relax, Rejuvenate and Beat the Winter Blues with Reiki

We all know the symptoms – feeling sluggish, out of sorts and tired. Reiki can help you relax and restore your energy during these tough months. Jennifer is offering specials during February and March to help you make it through until spring.

Call Jennifer at 773.968.6740 to make an appointment

000_DSCF3018 (2)Didier Nolet Paintings and Pastels
Didier Nolet
Paintings and Pastels.
An artist who was born and raised in Paris, France. He wanted to be an artist since a very young age.  For many years every summer he traveled throughout  France with his parents.  These trips left a very strong impression on him.  At the age of eighteen he entered the Beaux-Arts School in Paris to study painting.  This is also something that had a strong impact on him.  He finally could be himself and could do what he wanted to do the most in the world: to paint.

After he met a young American who was traveling through France, he moved to Chicago in 1979.  She became his wife.  This move had a strange effect on him.  It brought back many of his childhood memories.  These memories were so strong that he knew he had to put them on canvas.  He started to paint imaginary landscapes that reflect a blending of his childhood memories (he never uses photographs or any other visual support).  Over time, these paintings became more and more an expression of his state of mind, which in turn was affected directly by what happened in his life.  Some paintings came out serene, others dark and somber.

More recently he started a new series of paintings (some very large) reflecting the storms of his life; big crushing waves and surf.  His paintings are started with very small sketches.  He then paints small oil studies and finishes with a large piece.  He always allows himself the possibility of changing anything while he is working on the final painting.  He does not want to simply copy the studies.  Didier Nolet has been showing in Chicago and across the United States since 1980.  The Chicago Cultural Center and the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Illinois both organized a ten-year survey of his work.  He has shown in many galleries in Chicago,  including Struve Gallery, Eva Cohen Gallery, Ann Nathan Gallery, Lydon FineArt, and  Perimeter Gallery.  He has exhibited in Laguna Beach, California at Shona Gallery, Munson Gallery in Santa Fe, MC Gallery in Minneapolis, Suzanne Brown Gallery in Scottsdale, and  Marilyn Pearl Gallery in New York City.

Nolet is represented in numerous corporate art collections throughout the United States, has won many prizes and awards for his work including an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, and has been the subject of dozens of newspaper and magazine articles over the years. Elizabeth KlineElizabeth Kline Designs
Elizabeth Kline
Handmade Jewelry.
Made for casual wear, special events, or anything in between. Created in 2007, EKD is Elizabeth’s newest creative foray.  She is also an actor working in Chicago. She has been working with metals, semiprecious stones, and glass beads since 1999, when a love of jewelry became a love for design. Elizabeth expanded her interest in simple beading and wire work to include metalworking in 2002, when she began her studies at Lill Street Art Center in Chicago. This created many more possibilities to explore, be it hand-forged items, enameling, or casting molten metal. She has stayed with Lill Street to this day, where she continues to expand her horizons. Lately, the recent birth of her son has kept her away from the more hazardous lines of metalworking.  The newest focus is creating sculptural designs for centerpieces of adornment – necklaces, earrings, and bracelets – with wire or fine silver, which is kiln-fired in her home studio, then “dressed up” to create the pieces you see today.  For more info, visit www.eklinedesigns.com and www.eklinedesigns.etsy.com or email e-kline@sbcglobal.net 773.339.6694

Licensed Acupuncturist, Board Certified Chinese Herbologist.
Kate Rudigier is a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Illinois and nationally board certified in Chinese herbology.  She received her Masters in Science and Traditional Oriental Medicine (MSTOM) in 2006.  Kate specializes in the treatment of pain syndromes including chronic pain, joint pain, back and shoulder pain, and migraines.  Watch for her TV debut discussing the treatment and prevention of migraine headaches using acupuncture and Chinese Herbs on CLTV (coming soon!).

In addition to her acupuncture practice, Kate creates one of a kind gemstone earrings and necklaces.  Gemstones were created in the earth over millions of years and with the forces of nature (the five elements: fire, earth, metal, water, wood) and therefore are infused with these positive energies.  The energetic properties of gemstones can be utilized by having them around us, so why not enjoy their beauty by wearing them?  Kate likes to think about combinations of gemstones, not just how they look aesthetically, but how their energies function together: the harmonizing quality of pearls with the cleansing of rose quartz or the energy tonification of rubies.  It’s great fun!”  For more info visit www.cloudgateacupuncture.com or email krudigier@hotmail.com 773.617.2951

Zieve Studios

Michael Zieve

Paintings/Pastels/ Custom Finishes. For over twenty years Michael has been working concurrently as a fine artist, muralist and decorative painter/plasterer. As a young artist h exhibited his artwork in Chicago throughout the Midwest and in Europe. After living in Chicago for twenty years he relocated to Northwest Indiana in 1994.

In 1997 he created historical murals at the U.S. Post Office in Rolling Prairie, IN. and in 2007 he created a suite of sculptural paintings for Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. His work hangs in many Health Care Centers and private residences in the Chicago area.

For Michael, the beauty of painting resides in the meaning intrinsic to every mark, form and color relationship. These formal qualities create a nonverbal language that tells stories. The stories that emerge in his work often include figures that embody archetypal energies.  Sometimes these ‘deities’ reveal themselves spontaneously in the landscape, personifications of a ‘presence’ that suffuses the natural world.  In addition to his work as an artist, Michael facilitates intuitive painting workshops.  For more info visit,  www.michaelzieve.com and his commercial work at www.zievestudios.com or email mlzieve@yahoo.com 219.871.2094

Fine Artist. While walking the streets of Chicago, Cydney looked up and noticed several plastic bags trapped in a tree.  Others were floating in the air.  More tumbling along the ground.  At first she took them as litter, as so many do.  Cydney has taken her life experience and shared it through her art.  She draws her inspiration from her surroundings relying on the experiences in her daily life, her relationships with friends, family and accomplices.  She hopes to create an awareness of our life in progress and the obligation to find its brilliance and truthfulness through all the anxiety and uncertainties that encircle us. Her jewelry adornments are a reminder of how we can create  beauty, by transforming a useful, yet harmful material into a work of art.
