5th ANNUAL BRUCE BORLAND GOLF TOURNAMENT: Friday, September 3, 2010 1PM Start

Please join the Borland Family for a day of golf and fun at Deerfield Golf Course, in an effort to raise funds for the Bruce Borland Family. As you may or may not know, as a result of brain cancer and after undergoing three separate operations, Bruce is now a quadriplegic.

Dear Friends,

We just wanted to send out a heartfelt thank you for your kind words and generosity. It means so much to our whole family. We were at a doctors appointment recently, talking with Bruce’s internist about life and so called “quality of life” issues. Bruce told him how lucky he feels, to be able to be here with his family and friends, that he truly does have a very high “quality of life”. Our doctor was so moved by Bruce’s words. The doctor told us that he believes that heroes are not born, they are made by the circumstances that befall them and that Bruce is a true hero. While Bruce is probably the last person to consider himself a hero, Dr. Greenberger’s words ring very true. Bruce has an amazing outlook on life, he is always thinking in terms of working hard and one day walking again. He manages to find humor and joy in life every day. Once again, we would like to express our utmost gratitude to all of you who have helped to make it possible for us to have our “hero” right here at home with us! We send much love and many wishes for a happy and healthy year to you all!

Bruce, Jeanne, Jenny, Kyle, Kelly and Teddy Borland

CHI KA GO!: Sunday, September 12, 2010 7:30PM-12AM

CHI is the Life-Force, the Ki (Key), Mana, or dynamic vital energy which pervades all of life. The KA is the Spirit-Soul, our gathering of that CHI force into the uniqueness of our own being. And GO, the Oriental Game of Strategies, expresses the choices we make to share that uniqueness with our community. The CHI KA GO community has been celebrating on Second Sundays at Yoga Now, dancing, loving, healing, singing, celebrating until the midnight hour. Think of this as an all-ages sock hop in which you have the choice of dancing, yoga, hoops, energy, breath and bodywork, poetry, musicians, art appreciation and the inevitable surprises. We offer a chance to gather together with a variety of art forms and share our hearts and our souls with one another.

THIRD ANNUAL EDGEWATER GRALLEY FESTIVAL: Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 12PM-10PM

Third Annual Edgewater GRalley Festival Turns North Side’s “Alleys” Into Music Destination

Festival Serves as Official World Music Festival 2010 Venue;

Kings Go Forth to Headline

On Saturday, Sept. 25 from Noon to 10 p.m., the “alleys” of Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood will come alive with the region’s hottest music acts at the Third Annual Edgewater GRalley, an official World Music Festival 2010 venue.

The Edgewater GRalley, presented in partnership with St. Gertrude Parish and Uncommon Ground, features two stages of live music, food from the finest area restaurants, talented artisans and vendors with an emphasis on green living, a family corner, silent auction, and much more.

The GRalley is the city’s most unique festival as it is the only one that takes advantage of Chicago’s alley ways and wide sidewalks. The festival surrounds St. Gertrude Parish on the corner of Granville and Glenwood.

Jammin’ in the Alleys

With two stages of live music all day, the GRalley features some of the region and world’s best artists in jazz, modern, rockabilly and blues music. The GRalley also serves as an official World Music Festival 2010 venue. Headlining the festival and performing at 8:30 p.m. is Kings Go Forth (Luaka Bop Records), a ten piece soul and funk group from Milwaukee that is quickly gaining international recognition. Other World Music Festival 2010 acts include DJA-Rara, a group dedicated to preserving the music and culture of Haiti and AfriCaribe, a Chicago-based band that has a mission of celebrating the African musical influence on Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands.

The GRalley’s eclectic musical lineup also includes Joel Paterson and the Modern Sounds, a Chicago-based band that performs traditional American music including rockabilly, classic blues and hot jazz; Rock and Roll band The Del Moroccos performing at 4:30 p.m., the raw sounds of blues musician Mississippi Gabe Carter at 3 p.m., and foot-stomping cowboy sounds of the Golden Horse Ranch Band on stage at 2 p.m.

Grub, Beer Gardens and the Sports Corner

A festival isn’t complete without food and Edgewater has some of the best in Chicago! A wide variety of food is available, including traditional burgers and hotdogs to the more ethnic fare of the neighborhood’s Mexican, Thai and Japanese restaurants. After you fill up on food, enjoy a cold drink at one of the four beer and wine tents or in the dedicated Sports Corner where attendees can catch all the college football action on flat screen TVs.

Family Time

The GRalley’s family corner provides activities for kids of all ages. All attendees, especially children and families, can join in the Harry Osterman Bike Parade that kicks off the festival at Uncommon Ground. Then, attendees can hit the GRalley Kid’s Corner from noon until 5 p.m. where they’ll find crafts, games and entertainment. Games and activities for children include rock painting, origami, small flower pot decorating, put-put golf, a water target and conservation game, bean bag toss and more. A magician and several other performers will be on hand to keep everyone entertained as well.

 GReen Pavilion

From its inception, the GRalley has focused on being one of the city’s premier green festivals. The festival’s GReen Pavilion features vendors and artisans from around the community, with an emphasis on those that encourage green living and help introduce festival-goers to new ways of living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Vendors include the Chicago Conservation Corps, Friends of the Parks, Active Transportation Alliance, and Slow Food Chicago, among many others.

Mimi’s Organic Exchange, Transformations and Living Room Gallery will be sporting a booth in the Green Pavilion. Come for chair massages, Lotus Body Products, Eco-Friendly Art and an Education in Sustainability.

 Auction, Raffle Guarantee Winners

GRalley guests looking to take a break from the music will enjoy bidding on exciting items in the silent auction. Open from noon to 8 pm, the auction will include over 50 items up for bid including Blackhawks, Cubs and Chicago Sky tickets, sports memorabilia items, theatre tickets, restaurant & salon/spa certificates from throughout the Chicagoland area, wine tastings, Chicago museum memberships, getaway trips & unique family opportunities, gym memberships, professional services, beautiful gift baskets & one of a kind artisan pieces. In addition, for just $20 a ticket, guests have the chance to win $9,000 in cash prizes. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event or now at www.edgewatergralley.com .

Festival Details

The Edgewater GRalley is in the heart of Chicago’s Edgewater community, located on the far north side of the city. The festival is on the corner of Granville and Glenwood, just three blocks west of the Granville red line stop and near several CTA bus routes, including the 22 Clark bus and 36 Broadway bus.

General admission tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. Senior, children and student tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the gate. A family of four ticket package is $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. All advanced ticket sales include one free sandwich or burger.

The GRalley benefits the Edgewater community and all of Chicago. The event is produced by St. Gertrude’s Parish in partnership with Uncommon Ground and event partners Bud Light, Goose Island, State Senator Heather Steans and State Representative Harry Osterman. Money raised at the festival is used for community-wide programming and neighborhood-enhancing facility updates. St. Gertrude’s supports local organizations and nonprofits like Care for Real, Centro Romero, St. Vincent de Paul and Open Hands.
