Mimi’s 2020 Update: A Special Message from Mimi

Nurture. Growth. Flourish. Transform

I hope this finds you in a good place for yourself. It’s been some time since I sent a personal note, thus the lengthy newsletter. I personally was having a hard time writing and being able to express my vulnerability and healing throughout the process. Please take what you will from this. I feel blessed to continue to have a loving environment!

Why I’ve been away

I apologize for the absence. I have had a few challenging years and events. Two years ago I was overrun by a negligent driver speeding through an intersection, in which I flipped over my bike and crashed hard. Grateful to be alive and to have been a skilled cyclist to hit my brakes- I only got 10 stitches below my left eye and a sprained left shoulder.  Had I not reacted quickly; I would have been a hood ornament.

Last year, I was assaulted in a home-invasion by young adult neighbors who were high on drugs. Sadly, neither my ex-landlord nor police helped in any respect.  These events caused me to quickly uproot and move for my safety.

In this case, I am grateful for my martial arts training, which allowed me to fend off one assailant with a long wooden staff. I have been able to heal myself emotionally from these traumas with private, one-on-one counseling, chi kung, meditation and my practice of self-care. I am not going to lie, I was terrified. But it changed my perspective, and I never want to be in that position again.

I am grateful for counseling, friends, family, loved ones, my sangha and those to come who have been here for me. Words cannot express my gratitude. I am safe now, finding more peace each day and knowing that kindness does exist in this world too. It means the world to me. xoxo

The impact of the health crisis on my practice

Us Out Here mkc

Even though here in Illinois, we have gone into Phase 4, it is a much different reality for massage therapy, holistic practitioners and our clients (I prefer to call you my guests!). I miss my 2nd home, its view, clients, guests and community!!

I hope to return to my “Sanctuary” soon and you will join me!  Seeing a consistent decline in COVID-19 cases is integral to my return and the continued safety and overall wellness of our community.

In the weeks ahead, I will communicate new offerings through my practice as well as updates on new safety precautions and practice guidelines to maintain compliance with local, national and industry guidelines.

Scientific evidence shows the main mode of transmission is through direct exposure to respiratory droplets or prolonged exposure to viral aerosols in an indoor setting.  Individuals can transmit and spread the disease without ever knowing they had it, being pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic carriers of the virus. I do not want to risk being an asymptomatic carrier and unknowingly transfer the disease. That is too great a risk to my high risk clients and loved ones. I do not want any of us to be the cause of harm toward another. Instead, I hope we behave in support of one another. May Peace be on our Journey!

Our economy and my practice

My Private office, The Sanctuary for Transformations since 2003 (The Garland Building 111 N. Wabash Ave., Suite 1322) and Urban Oasis, a privately owned spa for 27 years, has been shut down since March 16th. The location at 12 W. Maple, where I “resided” on Wednesdays, Saturdays and more, will not be re-opening. The 939 W. North Ave. will re-open later in July. Due to the circumstances, I will not hold any permanent shifts yet and will fill in when I feel it is the appropriate time.

Peter has been an amazing owner, boss and individual to work for. We have a wonderful family here and complete love for each other! I am blessed to have had the best of my own business and working for a top notch spa. Our staff consisted of 65+ therapists, front desk and spa attendants. Unfortunately, neither of our small businesses, like so many others have received much help for loans or compensation of our lost wages during this time. Everything has been and will be in limbo for quite some time. That is the reality. We have been fortunate to have loyal patrons and folks that have stepped up and provided us with comfort, acknowledgement, some monetary support and even groceries. Thank you, thank you and thank you for your generosity and kind words! I am grateful to have beautiful folks, family, and friends in my life!

My small and temporary unemployment wage is set to expire soon, and my economic future is unclear.

Asking for help is hard

Sunset on Lake Michigan mkc

I’ve been able to make ends meet so far.  I’ve stayed current on all my bills, including rent for both my downtown office and home.  Through the months, my savings have dwindled.

I am concerned for my future employment, security and what it will look like in the new normal, living with COVID.

If anyone would like to make a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated and definitely not forgotten. Payments can be received through Chase QuickPay/Zelle, PayPal, Venmo and Square.

My personal journey so far.  My time has been filled with my own self-care.

I had the opportunity last week to speak and share my story with many individuals for the first time (on Zoom of Course) as to what my greatest accomplishments have been in a wonderful online seminar for massage professionals. In fact, due to CV, I have come to know myself more and find peace everyday. I am modest and tend to not let others know that I am not ok. I am struggling, like many, with feelings of vulnerability and what it means to be strong. I am human, an empath and like others I feel the sadness and grief that leads to the anger and rage. In times of challenges and struggles, I have been fortunate to have my Holistic Healing Practice and lifestyle, including Kali-Eskrima, Chi Kung, Meditation, my own counseling and coaching to know that I am not alone in this world. I send love vibrations and keep holding faith with my spiritual creator or god if you prefer that term (to me, they are the same as long as you believe). I hope you and others find love, compassion, equanimity, sympathetic joy and peace of mind on your journey.

I mentioned I’ve been a part of a wonderful online seminar, and it’s been helpful for reconnecting with humanity!! I’ve been given a sense of empowerment and permission to return to my practice when the timing is correct for all!  It’s the Massage Master Summit, if you are interested in my own research and care for myself, clients and my fellow community member’s health and well-being.  It ran from June 22nd-June 30th. It consisted of 7 in-depth, different perspectives and in person-caring webinars and separate zoom Q&A’s.

I have continued online CEU’s in Ayurveda Holistic Care and Chakra System. I am currently finishing taking CEU’s for Preventing Disease Transmission in a Massage Setting in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This online book offers in-depth information and step-by-step guidance on best practices for ensuring the health of both clients and therapists. https://massagemastery.online
